An Australian man has been extradited from Indonesia to NSW to face child sex charges.
In February, the Denpasar District Court ordered surfboard maker Paul Francis Callahan, 48, to be returned to Australia, where he is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.
On Friday, Indonesian authorities announced that Callahan had been extradited from Bali on Thursday night.
“Paul Francis Callahan has been extradited yesterday night,” Maliki, head of security for Kerobokan Prison, said.
“He was picked up by officers from Bali Police and prosecutor office in Kerobokan Prison at 8pm then flew from Ngurah Rai Airport to Australia at 11pm.”
NSW police documents showed Callahan fled Australia in November 2002, shortly after being questioned by police over the allegations in the coastal town of Byron Bay.
He was arrested by Indonesian authorities in January at his home in Bali, where he had lived for five years and was now married with a Balinese wife and young daughter.
Ria Khairiah, director for the International Law of Justice Ministry, said the case showed that Indonesia was not a refuge for people avoiding the law in their homelands.
“This also shows the world that to enter Indonesia, could not be just as they like and they could not commit any crime.”
Comment was being sought from NSW Police.
